Fear of the dentist is one of the most commonly overlooked yet most serious issues in dentistry. It is estimated that between 10 and 15% of adults in Europe experience dental anxiety so severe that they regularly avoid treatment, sometimes for years. The consequences can be serious: untreated decay, tooth loss, problems with chewing and speaking, and ultimately reduced self-esteem and health issues that extend far beyond the mouth.
If you are one of those people who keep putting off appointments because the mere thought of a dental chair makes you anxious, this article is for you. At PerfectSmile in London, we have been working with patients for whom visiting the dentist was not easy for many years. We know how to help effectively.
What is dental phobia and where does it come from?
Dental phobia, also known as odontophobia, is a specific fear of dental treatment. In its milder form, it manifests as anxiety and tension before an appointment. In more severe cases, it can cause panic, physical symptoms of stress such as trembling hands, a racing heart or nausea, and sometimes even panic attacks at the mere thought of the practice.
Where does it come from? Most often from negative past experiences, a painful procedure years ago, a dentist who lacked empathy, childhood trauma. Sometimes it is a fear inherited from parents or shaped by stories heard from others. Sometimes it is about losing control, the feeling of helplessness in the chair when someone leans over you with instruments in hand.
Regardless of the source, the fear is real and deserves to be taken seriously.
How do we talk to a patient who is afraid?
The first step at PerfectSmile is always a conversation. Before we begin any examination, we want to know exactly what you are worried about. Is it pain? The sound of the drill? The loss of control? The sight of the needle?
Knowing what triggers the anxiety allows us to adapt the appointment accordingly. Sometimes it is enough to explain each step of the procedure in advance, when a patient knows what is about to happen, the uncertainty disappears. Sometimes more time is needed, a slower pace, more breaks.
At our practice there is one rule we never break: the patient can always stop the procedure. We agree on a signal, usually raising a hand, and we respect it unconditionally. This simple agreement gives many patients an enormous sense of security and is why they come back.
It is also worth mentioning that the entire PerfectSmile team speaks Polish. For experienced patients in London, the language barrier itself can be a source of additional stress, when you cannot precisely say what you are afraid of or what you are feeling, the anxiety grows. We simply do not have that problem.
Computer anaesthesia, no more fear of the needle
One of the most common reasons for avoiding the dentist is the fear of injections. Many patients tense up the moment they see a syringe, and paradoxically, that very tension makes the anaesthetic more painful.
At PerfectSmile we use a computerised anaesthesia system that delivers the solution precisely and gradually, eliminating the sensation of a sudden sting. Patients who have experienced it are usually astonished, in most cases they feel almost nothing. Importantly, anaesthesia is always included in the cost of the procedure at our practice, with no additional charge.
A welcoming environment makes a difference
Fear is a whole-body response, not just a mental one. That is why we pay attention not only to what we do, but also to how our spaces look and feel. A modern, bright practice, a calm atmosphere, no unnecessary rush. We do not chase daily patient numbers, what matters to us is that every person leaves feeling they were truly heard.
For patients who want to ease themselves in gradually, we offer an introductory appointment, a visit with no procedures at all, simply to see the practice, meet the dentist and staff, and talk about your concerns. No pressure, no drills.
How to prepare yourself for an appointment?
A few simple things can significantly reduce anxiety before an appointment. It is worth booking a time when you are not tired, for many people, a calm morning is better than an appointment after a full day at work. It also helps to let the receptionist or dentist know at the time of booking that you experience anxiety, so we can prepare for your needs before you arrive.
Avoid reading frightening stories online before your appointment. Every case is different, and most dramatic accounts come from people who ended up in practices not equipped to work with anxious patients. We belong to a different category.
Children and dental phobia, starting with a good first experience
Fear of the dentist very often begins in childhood. That is why we take our work with the youngest patients particularly seriously. We welcome children from the age of 6 and make sure that their first visit is a positive experience, no pain, no stress, with a great deal of patience and a light touch.
A child who is not afraid of the dentist grows into an adult who takes care of their teeth regularly. It is one of the best investments a parent can make in their child’s health.
Do not put it off, fear does not have to hold you back
Dental phobia is a real problem, but it is one that can be worked with. At PerfectSmile we do not judge, rush or dismiss your concerns. Our goal is to make sure you leave the practice feeling that it was manageable, and in time, perhaps even without fear.
The practice is located at 36 Crown St, London W3 8SB. We are open Monday to Friday 9:00–20:00 and Saturdays 9:00–18:00. Book by calling 07490 565656 or online at twojdentysta.co.uk.
